What we check

Six things that stop EDDM files from printing right

  • Size and shape

Your file is compared with the exact USPS flat size you picked. Wrong shapes are filled to the piece and we tell you what was cropped.

  • Bleed

Designs that run to the edge need 1/8" of extra image past the cut. If yours stops at the edge, we extend it so no white line shows after trimming.

  • Resolution

We measure the real DPI at print size. Small and AI-generated images are enhanced to 300 DPI, and we tell you when a sharper original would still look better.

  • Print colors

Screen colors (RGB) are converted to print colors (CMYK) so what you approve is closer to what prints.

  • USPS postage box

On the back we place the correct EDDM postage box and "Local Postal Customer" block in the top-right corner, and warn you if your design sat underneath.

  • Fonts and PDFs

PDFs are checked for missing fonts, low-resolution images inside the file and wrong page sizes, and the trim and bleed are marked for the printer.

Set up your file right the first time

  1. Start from our template. Every size has a free template with the trim, bleed, safe area and postage box marked. Download templates.
  2. Build at full size plus bleed. For example 6.75 × 9.25 inches for a 6.5 × 9 postcard.
  3. Keep words 1/8" inside the edge. Headlines, phone numbers and web addresses must sit inside the safe line.
  4. Leave the top-right of the back clear. That's where USPS requires the postage box and "Local Postal Customer".
  5. Export a PDF. A print PDF keeps text sharp. Images inside should be 300 DPI at full size.

Questions

Is the EDDM file checker free?

Yes. There is no account and no charge. Upload a PDF, JPG, PNG or TIFF up to 50 MB and you get the report, a preview and a print-ready PDF. Files are deleted after 24 hours.

What size should my EDDM file be?

Your finished size plus 1/8 inch of bleed on every edge. A 6.5 × 9 postcard is set up at 6.75 × 9.25 inches, with important text kept 1/8 inch inside the finished edge. The checker shows the exact numbers for the size you pick.

Why does my AI-generated image look blurry when printed?

Most AI images are about 1,024 pixels wide. Spread across a 9-inch postcard that is roughly 110 DPI, while print needs about 300. The checker enhances the image, but fine text inside a picture can still look soft, so keep your headline, phone and web address as real text.

Where does the postage box go on an EDDM mailer?

In the top-right corner of the address side, with the "Local Postal Customer" block right under it, on a clear white area. Print Only mailers use the EDDM Retail box; Full Service mailers use the permit box of whoever mails them. The checker places the right one for the service you choose.

Can I order with the fixed file?

Yes. Choose your size, order, and upload the print-ready PDF at checkout. Before anything prints, you approve a proof and a person on our team checks the file again.
